Project GTI: 2000 (T-reg) Mk 4 GTI 1.8T

Volkswagen Driver’s Editor, Neil Birkitt, is a long-time member of Club GTI and a regular contributor to the uk-mkivs.net forum. His daily driver, for many years, has been a 2000 (T-reg) Mk 4 Golf GTI 1.8T with numerous modifications carried out for ‘Project GTI’ features in the magazine.

Despite clocking up over 245,000 miles during regular road use, it has often been seen lapping it up at track days and sprints. Previously fitted with a replacement engine, upgraded by VAGtech with a K04 turbo conversion, re-mapped by Motech Performance, with a Forge Motorsport FMIC and cold-side DV plus Milltek Sports exhaust, producing around 250 bhp, it also has the 6-speed gearbox from a SEAT Ibiza Cupra R, Sachs HD clutch and a Peloquin ATB diff to help put the power down...

KW Clubsport suspension with adjustable top mounts, Eibach anti-roll bars, TT wishbones and balljoints, DEFCONS + Powerflex poly bushes, a new ZF steering rack, R32 brakes/EBC Yellow pads front & rear, and 7.5 x 17-inch RS 4 replica alloys with 225/45 tyres and a Tyresure TPMS also help out on the daily 120-mile round-trip to work and back (OZ alloys and Toyo R888 / Goodyear F1 tyres are used for track days) Amazingly, while capable of 0-60 in 6 secs, it could still average 32-35 mpg and return 40+ mpg on a long steady motorway run!

After an engine failure, the car has been dormant for quite a while but the original AGU engine has recently been thoroughly rebuilt by The Engine Shop ( www.theengineshop.info Tel: 01322 350 022) and is currently awaiting a re-fit at VAGTech, ready for a few track days later in 2014.

In the meantime, we’ve been running a Mk 4 Golf V6 4Motion as a daily driver / project car, now fitted with Prinz Autogas LPG conversion, Westfalia towbar, Eibach suspension and anti-roll bars, and either Dunlop Sport Maxx RT (Summer) or Goodyear Ultragrip8 Winter tyres.
