GTI W12-650

At the recent GTI Festival in Worthersee, Austria, Volkswagen wowed the fansby unveiling a unique design study which combines a Mk 5 Golf GTI three-door bodyshell with a bespoke mid-mounted 650 PS bi-turbo W12 engine. With drive to the rear wheels, it is not only the most powerful Golf ever produced by Volkswagen but also the fastest, capable of 0 to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of over 200 mph.

The mid-mounted 5,998 cc W12 engine is an evolution of the 450 PS version fitted to the Phaeton, linked to a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. Twin turbochargers increase the power to 650 PS at 6,000 rpm,
with peak torque of 553 lb.ft. at 4,500 rpm, making it over three times more powerful than the conventional Golf GTI.

The bodyshell is 160 mm wider than the standard GTI, to accommodate the mid-mounted engine, bespoke drivetrain and the side-mounted cooling intakes, while the roof is constructed out of carbon fibre and has an integrated scoop to channel air into the rear-mounted radiators. The purposeful new stance is further emphasised by a set of 19-inch wheels, styled to mimic the standard wheels fitted to the Golf GTI, wrapped in 295 section tyres.
